How do solar panel warranties work and what actually gets covered

Solar warranties come in two parts: equipment warranties from manufacturers and service warranties from installers. Understanding the difference protects you from gaps in coverage.

Manufacturer warranties

Panel makers guarantee that hardware won't fail for 25 to 30 years and that output won't degrade below 80 or 85 percent over that period. Inverters typically carry 10 to 15 year warranties. These warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship, not damage from storms, accidents, or neglect. Most are transferable if you sell your home.

Installer service warranties

Your installer warrants their labor and system design for 5 to 10 years. This covers defects in installation and material failures caused by workmanship errors. Some installers offer extended warranties for an additional cost. Always request warranty documents in writing before signing. Review what's excluded to understand your actual protection. Solar systems rarely need repairs if installed correctly, but having clear warranty terms matters if problems arise.
